Hello –

This week’s CDC Salt e-Update includes a success story from CDC’s Sodium Reduction in Communities Program and a FDA Q&A about compliance dates for nutrition initiatives.

CDC Sodium Reduction in Communities Program: San Diego County Success Story

The County of San Diego’s Chronic Disease and Health Equity Unit created the Healthy Works: Sodium Reduction Initiative (SRI). SRI focuses on county-run congregate meal and workplace cafeterias, including the San Diego County Psychiatric Hospital that serves approximately 250 meals each day to patients and staff. The goal was to reduce sodium in meals by at least 10% over the two-year project.  The hospital’s food service operator exceeded the goal by initiating changes in procurement procedures, cooking practices, and ingredients for a 16% reduction of the menu’s average daily sodium content.

FDA Compliance Dates for Nutrition Initiatives

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has received questions about the timing of compliance dates for its various nutrition initiatives.  They have provided a Question and Answer webpage answering questions around the FDA sodium targets, how menu labeling requirements are impacting packaged food manufacturers, and compliance dates for the various nutrition initiatives.
